Where this transcription came from
The Piae Cantiones tune (1582), public domain, from the Mutopia hymn edition in A, read up three semitones into C: mutopiaproject.org/ftp/Anonymous/GoodKingWenceslas - midi_read.py GoodKingWenceslas.mid 0 53 --track 2 (+3) One verse, whole - the page-and-a-half legend is sung strophically, so like Silent Night it is taught whole and does not grow. The tenor-and-bass staff rides under it, moved the same three semitones.
Every melody in this catalogue is public domain and was transcribed from a named source, then checked against it by a tool rather than by ear. None of them was written down from memory - which is the usual reason two versions of a folk tune on the internet disagree.
