What the circle actually says

Start at C, at the top. Count up five notes - C D E F G - and you land on G, the next key clockwise. Do it again from G and you get D. Keep going and after twelve steps you are back at C. That is the entire construction: each key is a fifth above the one before it.

Everything else on the diagram is a consequence of that, which is why it is worth understanding once rather than memorising twelve times:

The inner ring: relative minors

Every major key has a minor key built from exactly the same seven notes, starting three semitones lower. C major and A minor use identical notes; so do G major and E minor. They share a key signature, and on paper you cannot tell them apart - only the music decides which note feels like home.

Touch C on the outer ring and then Am just inside it. Same seven notes, different centre of gravity, and the mood changes completely. That is what "relative" means here, and it is the reason the two rings share a spoke.

Why G♭ and F♯ are the same place

At the bottom of the circle the sharps and the flats meet. Six sharps spells F♯ major; six flats spells G♭ major; on a piano they are the same keys under your fingers. Which spelling gets used is a matter of what is easier to read for the music at hand, not of a different sound. This is also where the circle closes: keep going clockwise and the sharps would keep piling up, so notation switches to counting flats down the other side instead.

Hearing it rather than reading it

The reason this page plays is that the circle is a statement about sound, and a picture of it is a poor substitute. Play C, then G, then D, going clockwise: each chord shares notes with the last, and the motion feels like stepping. Then play C and jump to G♭: it does not step, it lands somewhere else. That contrast is the diagram's real content.
